... a collection of feminist excellence and kick-assery.
My name is Laura. I’m 22 years old and I’m a Web Journalism student at the University of Sheffield.
I’m not usually one for taking my clothes off and putting pictures of it on the internet, but I feel that having a community like this, where women and girls can see true examples of what real women look like is exactly what we need to get out of the mindset that size 0 is something we should aim for.
Before I met my best friend, my boyfriend, just over a year ago, I didn’t know what it meant to be happy with myself. Now I have someone with whom I can share the love I have for myself, who loves me for me whether my hair is screwed back, my skin is a mess or my legs are hairy and still finds me sexy. There have been many occasions where a guy has told me to change something physical about myself and I complied to make him happy, but now I have learnt that I am who I am - and that that’s something to be proud of.
This past year, I have learnt to look at what’s inside people; their qualities and flaws, ambitions, likes and dislikes, mannerisms and quirks and I have learnt to love people for all of those things.
I have learnt that true happiness comes from within and I can finally say that I am happy with who I am, mentally and physically. Being me has given me so many opportunities in life and has allowed me to meet some incredible people.
I promise that I won’t look at you and think you are too thin or too fat, or weirdly shaped. I love my body and I love yours too.
I support Body Positive Week and so should you.
